Citizen's Police Academy

About the Citizen's Police Academy

Looking to make a difference in our community?

The Citizens Police Academy is designed to establish rapport and increase the understanding between the citizens of Miami Township and their police. In addition, you will learn about the management of township government and the operations of the Fire/EMS department.

The Miami Township Police Department will be accepting applications from Miami Township residents who wish to participate in the Miami Township Police Department's Citizen Police Academy (CPA). The Miami Township Citizen Police Academy meets one night a week for 10 weeks. Class size will be limited to 20 individuals per academy and we accept back-up applications.

The majority of instruction will be held at the Miami Township Police Department, 5900 McPicken Drive. During these sessions, officers and administrators present information on nearly every function of the Police Department along with management of township government and the Fire/EMS department.

Typical topics that will be covered include:

Organization of the Miami Township Police Department
Selection and Training of the Miami Township Police Officers
Laws of Arrest, Search and Seizure
Special Operations (Canine, Bike Officers, Explorers, SRO)
Crimes against Person and Property
Crime Scene Investigation
Criminal Investigation Unit
Gang Awareness and Juvenile Crimes
Community Oriented Policing
Traffic Enforcement and Crash Investigation
Police Pursuit Operations and Defensive Driving (Hands on)
Use of Force and FAT'S. (Firearms Training Simulator) (Hands on)
Graduation

By the end of each session, the program has served its dual purpose of establishing rapport and increasing understanding between the citizens and the police officers that serve them. Each begins to view the other as a partner rather than an adversary. The community, as a whole, reaps the benefit of this partnership. Citizens Police Academy graduates tend to become more involved with community activities, particularly where law enforcement issues are concerned and officers take a more professional interest in problems that affect the community.

The requirements for participation are:

Resident or a close relationship to Miami Township
Be at least 18 years of age
No arrest record (minor traffic violations are excluded)
Completion of an application and acceptance into the Academy
Selection Process:
Upon receipt, the Miami Township Police Department will review all applications to determine which applicants are best suited for participation in CPA. All applications meeting the above criteria will be considered The selection of participants is at the sole discretion of the Miami Township Police Department, who reserves the right to disqualify, or remove from participation any person it, who in its sole discretion deems not appropriate for, or disruptive to the Academy.
